Opel Blitz Restoration Page 4
2000
June
Little work
commenced on the Blitz early on in the year. But 2 months before the War & Peace show
it was all hands on deck, literally !, as the flatbed sides and tail get were
fitted, new tyres fitted on all wheels and last but not least the windscreen was
made. Unfortunately when it was delivered the windscreen was too small depth
ways and couldn't be safely held in place. There was no time to remedy this
before the show. Also the engine developed a "knock" which is a
suspect big end. A debate continued as to whether or not to fit a modern day
engine or repair the original but as we had spent over £200 having the cam gear
manufactured it was decided that we will remove the crankshaft, have it reground
and fit new big end shells. The pistons and rings will also come under close
inspection.

With
only one week to go before the War & Peace show 2000 the Blitz was wheeled
out of the garage and given a coat of sand under spray followed by a camouflage
top coat. After some minor adjustments to the ignition timing the vehicle was
once again up and running and ready for transportation.
At the War & Peace show 2000
The SBG's Opel Blitz at the War & Peace show 2004. A final touch was adding an original Opel Blitz badge to the radiator grill. This is an original badge and was a battlefield find in Russia. In this photo the Blitz is in early war grey colours and markings as it was recently used in a TV film project. We now have the canvas and steel "Loops" for the flatbed enabling us to make this a covered vehicle if required.
The SBG's Blitz was also used in the ITV series "Island at War".
